Embracing Otherness

By embracing others, you are embracing yourself according to Thandle Newton. By being the only black and white atheist in her all white Catholic school ran by Nuns, reflected appraisal is used by how all the kids made Newton feel out of place and different, and that, actually did end up making her feel different and how she doesn't fit in. Significant others like peers and family apply to Newton's experience because as a kid growing up, she wasn't like all the other kids around her, she was different, her parents were different.
I do relate to her struggle to find an identity that people around her would accept because even if some people accept her identity for who she is, there is always that one group that could loathe your identity and that gets to you sometimes.
I actually do enjoy dancing to be my "different" self. When dancing, I am not required to speak, make noise, etc. I use my body and its' shape to tell a story, and I can tell any story I want to with my body.
I also felt what Newton was going through as a kid. I grew up in Connecticut, where I was the 3/500 Asian kids in my middle school. All the other kids were white, and I also felt so out of placed because I didn't have blonde/brunette hair or how I had different beliefs than everyone else.
