Attention Getters

In today's blog, I will be talking about different ways of how you can grab an audience's attention. One way is to establish common ground (Adler, 2015). By establishing common ground, it helps relate the speaker and audience so they have the same mindset in a way. Another example would be establishing credibility. If you don't prove some valid points, then the audience is not going to believe you. Also, characteristics such as, competence, character, and charisma helps build your credibility. Charisma is where the audience decides if they will like you; as in if you're friendly and genuine (Adler, 2015).
If I were to give a speech about college, I would talk about the savings they would make if they decided to go to a community college and then transfer, rather than a four year university. I would persuade them into that idea by establishing common ground like how everyone likes to save money? Or most people in my opinion. I would also show statistical charts to prove my credibility on actual savings one college student saves in 2 years if they decided on a community college than university. I would also show credibility by using my own experience (since this is the exact plan I am doing right now) to show how I don't have to worry about thousands of loans.

  1. Have you ever thought about telling a story or a joke to break the ice? What are other attention grabbers can a person use if they get nervous or freeze?
